Every week we get a handful of calls and emails from clients for whom we run their email on Rackspace. They have received emails supposedly from Rackspace saying that their account or email can’t be confirmed, or their profile needs to be updated, to name a few. These are scam emails!

Keep in mind that….
• Rackspace will never email you directly. Any messages about your email account will only come from us at  Abacus Web Services.
• Legitimate companies only use your name, not “Dear Valued Customer”, for example.
• The sender’s name and email address as well as the body of the message are formatted to look legitimate. Also, a legitimate sender will have the company name in their email address.
• The language used may not be grammatically correct English.

Phishing can also be done on bank accounts and credit card accounts so beware!

If you have any questions whether you have an account with us or not, call us! 941.870.5343

In this example, #1 shows that it is a fake email and #s 2 and 3 are fake links that do not lead to Rackspace!

New email message scams are coming out more and more quickly! The latest is one saying that your email couldn’t be synchronized (see picture below). If you look closely you can see that certain words are a clue to it’s unauthenticity, such as the word ‘mails’ instead of ’email’. They also use the work ‘synchronized’ when we just say ‘sync’ or ‘synced’. Also, check the highlighted email address that says it’s coming from siberia@siberia-hotel.ru. I can assure you that Rackspace is not in Russia.

Any messages about your email service will come from Abacus Web Services and NOT Rackspace.

Here is another example which shows that the email address is not from Rackspace and it has poor grammar and punctuation.

We have mentioned recently that there has been a wave of fake emails from our email provider (see Scam Emails or Phishing blog) trying to get access to your email account. There is another new wave of emails coming out that actually threaten bodily harm and blackmail. If you receive such an email, please look at them carefully as they are more than likely fake!

One example of these emails is one that says they have caught you doing something inappropriate on your computer and that they have recorded it. They then threaten to release it if you do not pay a particular amount in Bitcoin. (Bitcoin is “a type of digital currency in which encryption techniques are used to regulate the generation of nits of currency and verify the transfer of funds, operating independently of a central bank”).

Another example is pictured below that threatens bodily harm. Please note the language that is used shows that English is not their first language. It is pretty clear that these are fake messages, however, if you receive an email like any of these and are unsure if they are fake or not, please contact us and we will help you!
