Creating Websites That Build Your Brand Tel: 941.870.5343

We all want our conversations with our web designer (and any other vendor) to be productive and we want to be understood. When you understand more of the lingo of the web design world, it makes it easier to have that productive conversation about your website.

This post will go through a list of 10 design terms and definitions that can help you translate visual concepts into verbal language. The design language is complex and challenging to understand, especially for non-designers. As a result, we hope that this list aids your understanding and concisely explains the terminology.

1. CMS
The acronym CMS stands for Content Management System. CMS allows you to modify, add, and manage your website without knowing programming languages or writing website coding. WordPress is the most preferable CMS software.

2. CTAs
The command you give to a visitor on a specific page of your website is a CTA – Call-To-Action. Common examples of CTA are:

  •  Call Today!
  •  Schedule a Consultation
  •  Request a Quote
  • Contact Us

CTAs can be text, buttons, or various other things as long as they draw attention like being in a separate section or in an attractive color.

3. DNS
DNS stands for Domain Name System. The DNS converts a website’s URL address into an IP address, allowing visitors to visit a website without remembering an 11-digit number, IP address.

4. Domain Name
This name identifies a specific website. For example, www.abacuswebservices.com is a domain name.

5. Header Tags
Header tags are used to distinguish headers (or titles) and sub-headings from the rest of the material on an online page. They are also known as head tags, heading tags, and Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) header tags. The relevance of the labels is assigned in a hierarchy from H1 to H6, with H1 being the most important. These tags are necessary for SEO purposes to correctly categorize and measure the text on a website.

6. Hosting
An internet hosting service saves and distributes all of the website material that will be shown to viewers, including files, text, video, photos, and code. It makes it possible for a user to see your website correctly.

7. HTML
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the coding that organizes a web page’s structure and content. The content might be managed using paragraphs, a list of bullet points, or graphics and data tables.

8. Hyperlink
A link on a website connects one page to another page on the same website (internal) or a page on a different website (external). These transform text on a web page into a clickable link to a new page.

9. Responsive Web Design
It is a web design and development method that allows your website to display correctly across various devices, including smartphones, tablets, and desktops. Responsive web design is a technique that enables the website to display optimally regardless of the device’s size or input methods.

10. SEO
Search Engine Optimization is a strategy and approach for creating a website easily found by search engines (Google, Yahoo and Bing) and thereby potential customers or visitors. SEO influences content production, page names, pictures, load speed, code, file types utilized, and more in a web design.
